I wanted to tell the story of a downtrodden character, who sacrifices her own well-being in order to protect the one thing that gives her life meaning. With an unusual friendship at the heart of this film, Parthenabe for me is essentially about memory. I wanted to explore the power and hope memory gives those, who still have it, and the despair it causes, when those we love begin to lose it. Turning to films like Woody Allen's Interiors and Roger Michell's The Mother for inspiration, we used mirrors, reflections, and gentle camera moves to emphasise the film's theme. Using extreme differences in lighting approach and colour-schemes, we further tried to craft a strong distinction between the warmth Parthenabe brings to Albert's home and the cold, stark emptiness of her own medical situation. It was important to me within this context to create two very fragile characters with similar fates, whose friendship and happiness depend solely on each other.
